Problem

Ingersoll-Rand and Trane had thousands of field technicians selling complex HVAC systems into houses that were all different. Sizing a system wrong is expensive in both directions — undersized and it never keeps up, oversized and the customer paid for capacity they will never use.

The diagnosis was happening on paper, in a basement, against a catalogue.

Solution

A comprehensive iPad tool for the technician standing in the house: document the property, work through the diagnosis, and produce a correctly sized prescription with the customer watching it happen.

Built native, on CoreData, so the whole thing worked in a basement with no signal and reconciled later.

Analysis

Offline was not a feature here, it was the premise. A sales tool that needs connectivity is useless in exactly the place it gets used, which is the mechanical room of somebody's house.

Native was the right call for the same reason Cordova was right for Verizon: this one is a long structured interview with a lot of state, not a data display.

Result

It shipped and was used across Trane's field organization, and changed how a complicated technical sale got made in person.
